(Stafford Springs, CT)—Stafford Speedway’s Limited Late Model cars take center stage this Friday night, May 29th with their Xtra Mart Xtra D 25-lap feature event. The top-5 finishers in this Friday night’s feature will split $500 evenly among them and Duane Provost will be looking for two wins in a row in more ways than one. Provost was the winner of last Friday night’s Ltd. Late Model feature and he was the winner of the 25-lap Xtra Mart Xtra D feature event last season, but he will be facing some stiff competition in the race for the checkered flag.
The Limited Late Model division has been dominated by the Saunders twins thus far in 2015, with Al and Cliff winning 3 of the first 5 races of the season. Al Saunders is also the only driver to have recorded top-5 finishes in each of the first 5 races, including three podium efforts, and he currently leads the Ltd. Late Model championship standings. Cliff was the 2014 R.A.D. Automachine Rookie of the Year in the Limited division and he is currently fourth in the points standings with two wins to his credit so far. The Saunders twins will be looking to rebound from their Xtra D effort last year where Al placed 7th and Cliff finished 10th.
The best driver in the division not named Saunders thus far in 2015 has to be Austin Bessette. Bessette is currently second in the points standings, only 4 points or two positions on the track behind Al Saunders. Bessette recorded his first win of the season back on May 8th and he leads the Limited division with 4 podium finishes through the first 5 races of the year.
Right behind Bessette in the standings is defending track champion Andrew Hayes. Although Hayes has yet to win a race this season, he is repeating his consistency of one year ago where 17 top-5 finishes in 18 races helped him claim the championship. Hayes’ worst finish in 2015 has been a 7th place effort and he has stood on the podium three times this year.
Last week’s winner Provost will look to make it 2 in a row in both 2015 and in the Xtra D feature. Provost had a quiet 2015 going until his victory last Friday night, which vaulted him into a tie with Cliff Saunders for fourth place in the points standings. Provost said in NAPA Victory Lane how a new setup with new shocks and some fresh tires will have him looking forward to returning to the winner’s circle as the 2015 season progresses.
Sitting only two points behind Cliff Saunders and Provost in the points standings is David Arute. Arute has yet to reach victory lane this year but he is one of 6 drivers to have finished each race of the 2015 season in the top-10 and Arute has a knack for heating up his on track performance as the temperature heats up during the summer. Arute was part of last year’s Xtra D top-5 finishers along with Provost, Hayes, Bessette, and Norm Sears and with four drivers in the top-6 of the 2015 points standings, the competition is going to be fierce as the Limited Late Model drivers chase after the Xtra Mart bonus money this Friday night.
The Ltd. Late Model Xtra Mart Xtra D is the third of five Xtra D features to be held during the 2015 season. The Xtra Mart Xtra D Series continues with the SK Modified® Xtra D on June 19, and the SK Light Xtra D feature on July 3. The SK Modified® Xtra D will split $1,500 among the top-5 finishers while the SK Lights will split $500 among the top-5 finishers.
