On This Date in Stafford History: May 12

1973

Ron Bouchard kicked off what was to be a stellar 1973 season that saw him score his 3rd consecutive win of the 1973 season on May 12 on his way to winning 10 races and the modified track championship that season.  Tom Cassella won the Late Model Sportsman feature for his first career victory at Stafford.  Cassella would go on to win a total of 5 races in 1973 and 2 more in 1974 for a career total of 7 wins.

 

1978

Both Geoff Bodine and Tom Rosati were the men to beat in 1978 at Stafford.  Bodine won 13 modified features and Roasti took down 10 Late Model Sportsman feature events and both men would win the track championship that season.  Bodine’s May 12 win was the first of his 13 wins and Rosati’s was the first of his 10 wins.  Steve “Junior’ Johnson won the Street Stock feature, his one and only win of his Stafford career.

1981

Ray Miller won the modified feature, Pete Fiandaca won the Late Model Sportsman feature, and Dave Dickman won the Street Stock feature.  Miller’s win was his first of four modified wins in 1981 and it was his 6th of 14 career wins.  Fiandaca’s win his second of 5 wins during the 1981 season and the 5th of his 8 career Stafford wins.  Dickman’s feature win was his first career victory and the first of 3 wins he scored during the 1981 season.  Dickman won twice more in 1983 for a total of 5 career wins.

1995

Tony Sylvester won the SK Modified® feature and John Yale, Jr. won the DARE Stock feature.  Rain washed out the ProStock and Late Model feature events this night.  Sylvester’s win his first of 2 wins in 1995 and was the second to last win of his Stafford career.  Yale’s win was his first career Stafford win and he would go on to 3 DARE Stock features and 6 Late Model features.

2000

Curt Brainard won the SK Modified® feature, John Leger won the ProStock feature, Mike Quintiliano won the 100-lap Late Model feature, and Carl Holmgren, Jr. won the DARE Stock feature.  Brainard’s win was his first of 2 wins in 2000 and was the fourth of his 5 career wins.  Leger’s win was his only win of the 2000 season and was the 12th of his 15 career wins.  Quintiliano’s win was his first of 2 wins during the 2000 season and it was also his second 100-lap win.  Holmgren’s win was his second of 3 wins during the 2000 season.​

2017

Ted Christopher won the SK Modified® feature, Michael Bennett won the CBYD Late Model 50-lap feature, Cory DiMatteo won the SK Light feature, Cliff Saunders won the Limited Late Model feature, and Zack Robinson won the DARE Stock feature.  Christopher’s win was the first of 6 wins he notched during the 2017 season and they would sadly be the final 6 wins of his illustrious Stafford career.  Bennett’s win was his first of 5 wins during the 2017 season; DiMatteo’s win was already the second win of his rookie campaign in 2017 that would see him win the championship; Saunders’ win was his first of 3 wins in 2017, adn Robinson’s win was his first of 3 wins in 2017.
